Atarangi Whenua - Shadow Land Exhibition
Atarangi Whenua is the collaboration of a Painter and Poet creating visual works of art and poetry, exploring cultural identity.
Artist, Penny Howard and Poet, Doug Poole, focus on their respective culture; through the eyes of children who were lost to their Marae and Village. Due to the diasporas of Maori and Samoan during the 20th Century, to 21st Century experiences. This project honors and validates the cultural experiences and upbringing of each respective artist.
Penny Howard is a qualified and experienced arts practitioner in fine arts, her technique of painting on cut out silhouettes is innovative. Penny places images on metaphoric silhouettes. Folds within the “Va” (the spaces between us all) to launch from. Recreating the emotive forces of memory & reality; metaphor & motion.
Doug Poole’s poetry speaks of his Turangawaewae within his Aiga and his Samoan Culture. Being labeled an “Afakasi” his journey is to validate the stories and deep love for all things Samoan. Doug’s poetry uses innovative language and a mix of poetic and prosaic form the tell his unique stories.
