okaioceanikart gallery promoting works by emerging and established Artists from the Pacific
April 19, 2010
An exhibition by Penny Howard
At okai@Reef Gallery April 15 – May 7
Atarangi Whenua – Shadow Land is a collaborative work by visual artist Penny Howard (Ngapuhi/Pakeha) and poet Doug Poole (Samoa/Palagi). The works produced both lyrically and visually are an expression of two different artists’ narratives of finding ones cultural identity. An exchange of dialogue takes place between Penny’s sculptured wood silhouettes and Doug’s poetic verse as they explore memories of whanau and aiga; whakapapa and gafa, against the backdrop of colonization and the Pacific Diasporas.
Artist Penny Howard hails from Whangarei and now currently resides in Te Atatu West Auckland. As a mother of two children, families are of importance within Penny’s art; as are the flora and fauna that adorn her paintings.
Catch Atarangi Whenua now at okai@Reef Gallery 69 Beach Rd Auckland City before it ends on May 7. Viewing times are Tuesday to Thursday 11am – 5pm and Saturdays 11am – 1pm.
